Turn your taxonomy into a mapping you can use.
Appellation builds and tests models that map free text to the categories your organization already uses.
- You provide and control
- Your taxonomy and the business meanings it defines
- Appellation handles
- Building, testing, operating, and improving the mapping
- You receive
- A mapping available through the website and API, along with the evidence behind it
Start with the categories you already depend on.
During onboarding, your taxonomy is loaded into Appellation's importer. It may be as simple as a list of category labels. Definitions, aliases, exclusions, examples, and hierarchy are optional. When available, Appellation uses them to build and test models that better distinguish related categories and preserve important business distinctions.
Original category IDs and labels
| Category ID | Category label |
|---|---|
| 811111 | General Automotive Repair |
| 311812 | Commercial Bakeries |
| 541511 | Custom Computer Programming Services |
Appellation compares models before choosing one for your taxonomy.
Appellation builds and compares models for your taxonomy, checking how well they map the same test inputs to suitable categories. You can inspect the test results and see why that version was selected, without having to choose or operate the underlying models.
When results from the same inputs and taxonomy are available, Appellation can compare its mapping with another tool. If the inputs or categories differ, the comparison states those limitations plainly.
Loading the published evaluation…
Use it directly or connect it to your workflow.
Enter values in your browser and inspect their results, or connect the API to the workflows that need those categories. You have access to both, using the same tested mapping.
Each result keeps your original text alongside the matching category and identifies the taxonomy version used. When the answer is unclear, the default behavior is to say so. The test results remain available, so you can inspect how that version performed and where it struggled.

Improve the mapping without changing how you use it.
Appellation tests improvements while you continue using the same website and API. When Appellation releases an improved version, it becomes active for you automatically. Your taxonomy and category IDs stay in place, and you can inspect what changed and the evidence behind it. Returning to an earlier version is your choice.
When you add another taxonomy, Appellation develops and evaluates models for it through the same process. Each taxonomy has its own active version and supporting evidence, with Appellation managing improvements over time.
Begin with the taxonomy causing the problem now.
Support for private taxonomies is being prepared. Early access will begin with one taxonomy and the importer shown here. The taxonomy itself is enough to begin. Examples, special requirements, and results from another tool can be included when available and relevant.
The intended workflow makes an early version available for inspection while testing continues. It remains clearly marked as a preview until testing and selection are complete. The tested mapping is then available through both the website and API, along with the evidence behind it.
